happy new year!

2016 is still coming to a close in some parts of the world, but I can already hear the collective sighs of relief.

It hasn’t been the kindest year to a lot of people; we’ve suffered both as our individual persons, and as the global community. But, as the last sliver of 2016 is drowned out by cheers and fireworks and raised glasses (or cups of coffee, if you’re like me and prefer that), it’s also been a pretty darn good year. I implore you to think of the things that you did manage to achieve, of the lovely people that you’ve met, of the loved ones that have remained hale and hearty, and of the person you were.

I say ‘were’ because we’re definitely going to be different people in this coming year. Our experiences, motivations, even our state of mind, will shape us, however slight the difference may be.

Even if you can’t really think of any way that 2016 has been good to you, that’s okay. The circles of the world are like that – sometimes you get a crappy spin, and unfortunately it can last a while. But with a new year comes the chance to spin again, and that’s always something to look forward to!

Things like “page 1 of 365” will start floating around soon and will occasionally resurface throughout the year, but if it’s anything I’d like more people to do, it’s to not see the year one day at a time. Maybe it’s just me – it feels too monotonous, like measuring the next year of my life in fixed units of 24 hours. Instead, I hope you measure your 2017 through the really small moments. The time you smiled at an old lady selling fruits in a coffee shop, or the time you accidentally burnt your eggs in the frying pan, or the book you read that left a hole in your heart when you put it down. It would be nice (says the idealist in me), if all of us would see that a year can be significant as long as you’re happy, as long as you can look back fondly at the small and big moments alike.

All that said, if you’re still reading this, I hope your 2017 will be a fulfilling and beautiful one. Do the one thing you’ve been putting off, meet the one person you’ll learn to love, go someplace, be kind, sleep more, eat more, anything – as long as you don’t bring hurt to yourself or anyone else ♡

20세븐틴, let’s go! ( ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

(Extra cookies this new year if you got that last part, heh.)
